Krzysztof Szumanski is one of the most distinguished Polish baritones of his generation. In the current season he will perform Nabucco in Nabucco, Escamillo in Carmen, Scarpia in Tosca and Stolnik in Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko at the National Opera House in Warsaw – Teatr Wielki. He will also appear as Alfio in Cavaleria Rusticana in Estonia and perform in song recitals with pianist Bojana Dimkovic. In seasons 2016/17/18 Mr Szumanski was leading baritone at Staatstheater Darmstadt. He appeared as Bluebeard at the premiere of Bartok’s Blueabeard Castle, as Scarpia and as Escamillo. In 2017 he made his debut in the title role of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer. As Escamillo he also performed at the Poznan Opera House. He was invited again to perform at the prestigious Beethoven Festival in Warsaw founded by Krzysztof Pendercki, this time as Nick Shadow (Rakes Progress) with the Warsaw Philharmony. Between 2008 and 2013, Krzysztof Szumanski was member of the Ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin where he appeared as: Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Alidoro in La Cenerentola and Paolo Orsini in Rienzi. Additionally, he sung Angelotti in Tosca, Masetto in the production of Roland Schwab’s Don Giovanni and also as Panthee in Les Troyens and as Zuniga in Carmen. After joining the Deutsche Oper Berlin Ensemble, Szumanski made his debut at the Wexford Festival in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden conducted by Dimitri Jurowski. He was invited back in 2011 to perform the role of Count Palatine in R. Statkowski’s opera Maria. As a former member of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at The Royal Opera House he appeared as Zuniga in Carmen, Narumov in Queen of Spades, Sciarrone in Tosca, Starveling in Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pietro in Simon Boccanegra. He was also covering the roles of Nick Shadow in Rake’s Progress, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore and Ferrando in Il trovatore. During this time he worked with such conductors as Sir Antonio Pappano, Semyon Bychkov, Ivor Bolton, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Bernard Haitink and Mikko Franck. Previously, he studied at The National Opera Studio in London and the Frédéric Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and attended masterclasses with Ileana Cotrubas, Catherine Malfitano, Alison Pearce, Alan Opie, Bernd Weikl, Rusko Ruskov and Gerald Finley.
